I’ll never forget my first practice with the Raiders in 1980. I became a little worried when I learned that I would be a lineman and that the cigar smoking Coach Leftridge was the line coach. But I soon learned that he cared very much for his players and he had a way of making you not want to let him down. He rarely raised his voice, but would instead sigh and shake his head when you messed up. You knew you really messed up when he took his hat off too. After my two years with the Raiders, Coach Leftridge had become much more than just a coach, and remains one of the few people I don’t want to let down.
